Young Carers Action Day
Today here at Orchard Training, we are celebrating Young Carers Action Day and this year’s theme is “Give me a break.”
Young carers are extraordinary individuals (18 year olds or younger) who assist relatives or friends with disabilities, illnesses, or other conditions. These young carers often assume the responsibility of looking after a sibling or are children who would typically care for a parent, grandparent, or other family member. It can be difficult for young people to identify their role as carers as they mature and take on responsibilities they see as a normal part of their daily life.
How can you give a break to a young carer? You can support your Study Buddy, who is a young carer, by listening attentively, offering help, and making sure they can attend the event we are organizing.
When individuals register with us, we always encourage them to join their local carers group. In Surrey, this is Action for Carers Surrey. They offer support and opportunities to connect with other children and young people in similar situations, allowing them to have fun and socialize. The Young Carers team truly understands how these additional responsibilities can impact your daily life, schoolwork, and time with friends.
They assist young carers throughout Surrey and from all types of families, offering various support options based on your circumstances. This ranges from activities that provide a break from caregiving and the chance to meet peers in similar situations, to more intensive groups and personalised one-on-one assistance for young carers facing more challenging situations.
