attachment


This word has two different but related meaning.


The first meaning an extra piece or part that is with the main part


Example of using it in a sentence: "I have added the document as an attachment to this email."


It can also be used to mean the feelings of fondness someone has for somebody or something.


Example of using it in a sentence: “Nanny has a sentimental attachment to Granddad’s old photograph.”


The root word has come a long way from its original meaning in the Old French and Old English meaning the arrest for contempt of court. If you didn’t show respect for the court or the judge or his ruling, you were arrested and ‘fixed’ attached to a prison wall.
